Federal Court Rules Against Traditional Marriage

August 5, 2010

Catholic bishops across the country have begun voicing their objections to the federal court ruling overturning Proposition 8, California’s voter-approved constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman.  As the decision applies only to California, it does not affect Kansas’ marriage amendment, nor does it affect federal law, which does not recognize same-sex marriage.  It is now widely expected that the case will eventually make its way to the US Supreme Court, setting the stage for a decision some are anticipating as a possible “Roe v. Wade on marriage.”
