Red Mass with the Kansas Catholic Bishops and Kansas Legislators
Coinciding with the start of the legislative session, the Kansas bishops host the annual Red Mass, a special liturgy invoking the Holy Spirit’s guidance upon lawmakers, judges, and legal professionals. The 2027 Red Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 19 at noon, at Assumption Catholic Church, 8th and Jackson, directly north across the street from the State Capitol. This year's homilist will be Bishop John Brungardt of the Diocese of Dodge City. The Red Mass draws Catholic legislators and others involved in the legal and political fields. Named for the red vestments worn by clergy, symbolizing the Holy Spirit and the martyrs of the Church, the Mass is an opportunity for the Catholic community to come together and pray for wisdom, justice, and moral guidance in the legislative process.

The Kansas bishops, as part of their leadership roles in public policy, often deliver a homily that addresses the moral and ethical dimensions of lawmaking, urging legislators to consider Catholic teachings in their work.
The Red Mass serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of faith in public life and encourages dialogue between the Church and state officials on issues of justice, morality, and the common good.
