The Kansas Catholic Conference (KCC) actively monitors key legislative issues that reflect the moral teachings of the Catholic Church. Our areas of focus include protecting human life, defending religious liberty, upholding the sanctity of marriage and the family, and addressing poverty and economic justice. The laws and policies in these areas are vital to the well-being of society and the protection of the dignity of every person, especially the most vulnerable.

KCC engages with these issues to ensure that Kansas laws reflect Catholic principles of justice, compassion, and the common good. By monitoring proposed legislation and public policy decisions, KCC advocates for outcomes that respect life, support families, protect religious freedoms, and promote fairness in economic systems. Each issue we follow serves to safeguard the moral and ethical fabric of society, rooted in Catholic social teaching.

These and other issues cut across political and partisan barriers. They are universal and Catholic in nature. The following list is only a partial look at legislation we follow.

  • Protecting women and preborn babies from the predatory abortion industry. This includes legislation that provides funding for Pregnancy Resource Centers throughout Kansas, requires women seeking an abortion are fully informed about all aspects of the procedure they are contemplating, and much more.
  • Defending the integrity of the family. This includes legislation safeguarding children from the insidious impact of laws, regulations and other actions contrary to Natural Law governing human sexuality. This includes advocacy in favor of legislation requiring girls and women compete in athletics only against other biological girls and women and stopping the horror of chemical castration and other so-called “gender transition” being perpetrated upon children in Kansas.
  • Affordable healthcare access for all. Medicaid is a system of healthcare access that needs healing, but Medicaid Expansion remains the best option for many Kansans.
  • Mental Healthcare for those who need it. Young Kansans facing a serious mental health crisis are showing up in emergency rooms in greater numbers than ever before. Treatment before trouble boils over is key.
  • Educational Choice. Parents are the first and best educators of their children—whether that happens in a public school, private school, Catholic school, a home school environment or wherever. The Kansas Catholic Conference strongly believes in educational choice and strong public schools.
  • Economic issues. Stress over household finances is a major driver of domestic unrest and instability. The Kansas Catholic Conference advocates for tax policies that help lower income families and individuals as well as issues like Payday Loan Reform.
  • Homelessness. The issue about how to address the growing problem of unhoused is complicated and vexing. What has been done does not seem to be working, but what does help? The Kansas Catholic Conference wishes to be a part of the solution.
  • Immigration. This is primarily a federal level issue, with ramifications for Kansans, even though we live far from the border. Catholic Teaching guides us to treat the migrant with dignity and respect, but also calls for borders to be secure with a systematic and fair method of immigration. We must continue to explore humane solutions.
