The threat of abortion is the preeminent priority issue of the Kansas Catholic Church because it directly attacks life itself, takes place within the sanctuary of the family, and results in the sheer number of lives being destroyed.
The Catholic Church teaches that protecting human life is essential because every person is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and possesses inherent dignity. Life is viewed as a sacred gift from God. The Church consistently opposes acts like abortion and euthanasia, which directly attack this dignity (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2270).
Pope St. John Paul II, in Evangelium Vitae, emphasizes the “inviolable right to life” and calls on society to defend the most vulnerable, such as the unborn and elderly. This teaching guides the Church's pro-life advocacy and care for all stages of life (EV 57).
Beyond individual issues, the Church urges Catholics to engage in public policy that promotes the sanctity of life in broader contexts, including poverty, war, and the death penalty. This consistent ethic of life ensures that every human being is respected and protected throughout their life.
