We are Americans. We are Catholic. We are proud to be both. Religious liberty is a fundamental human right that promotes human dignity and guarantees all other rights.

The Kansas Catholic Conference seeks to strengthen and sustain religious freedom by assisting Kansas bishops, individually and collectively, to teach about religious freedom to the faithful and the broader public, and to promote and defend religious freedom in law and policy.

Religious liberty is central to Catholic teaching as it respects the dignity of the human person by allowing individuals to freely pursue and express their relationship with God. The Church, through documents like Dignitatis Humanae, emphasizes that people have the right to religious freedom, both in private belief and public practice (DH 2). This ensures that individuals can act in accordance with their conscience and faith.

Pope St. John Paul II highlighted the importance of religious liberty for the common good, as it enables individuals to contribute to society in line with their faith. Protecting this freedom allows for a more just and moral society, where people can live out their beliefs in education, healthcare, and other public spheres.

The Church continues to stress the importance of safeguarding religious liberty, especially in modern times when it faces growing challenges. Pope Francis reaffirms that religious freedom is a fundamental right and vital for peace and justice within society. Defending this liberty ensures that individuals and institutions can follow their faith without interference.
